Please note that coreutils-5.0 is pretty old, and I recommend you try a
newer version.  The latest stable release is available here (and on
several mirrors):
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-5.97.tar.gz

but there is also a newer unstable release available (which is probably
pretty usable):
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-6.1.tar.gz

If you see that the issue persists with one of those versions, it would
help if you could look at the part of the created config.log file which
has more details about this error (just search for the corresponding
warning in it) and report that to address@hidden then.
