After I sent you my previous e-mail, in subdirectory ./tests of the 
build directory I used less to look at the script testsuite and 
discovered that I could run the tests directly using that program.  So 
experimentally, I tried

./testsuite 1-10

and got ok for all ten tests with a report at the end that all 10 tests 
were successful.

So I tried

./testsuite 90-93

wondering what might happen, but all four tests gave ok and the report 
said all four tests were successful.  Since I had not been able to run 
tests 222-297, I gave

./testsuite 222-297

and all tests gave ok and the report said all 76 tests were successful.  
So I gave

./testsuite 221

and got a failed and a request to send in testsuite.log which I have 
attached.

So it seems that I can really install autoconf-2.61 although I don't 
understand why I am able to run these tests using testsuite in 
subdirectory tests but have problems when I try to use make check from 
the build directory.

Hope this new information helps, and if I can do anything else to 
provide you with more information, I would be glad to do it.
