Try this:
if test "$mpidisabled" = "yes"; then
        list_of_compilers="pathCC xlC g++"
        list_of_compilers="mpiCC mpixlC"

Also, you could consider the ACX_MPI module from the Autoconf Macro
Archive for MPI compilers and associated changes.
