It's always the same problem: do we want to solve the issue _now_, or
we delay this issue until Autoconf handle it?
Personally I consider aclocal should never have existed. Of course it
was necessary because Autoconf did not provide what was needed, so
it's been a good thing, but in a perfect world, this task should be
addressed by Autoconf.
Some time Autoconf will. I don't know when :(
Therefore, I'm reluctant at making aclocal bigger, as people should
not get dependent on it.
As far as the current patch is concerned, I appreciate your willing
not to pollute the environment via reuse, but conversely it means
you're just addressing your own problem: not everybody will accept
putting non Autoconf macros in the Autoconf lib directory.
I probably suits you, but it seems inadequate to me.
And given that we don't want to add new envvars...
