automake 1.5 distclean target

Dear Automake maintainers,

the following question either indicates an Automake bug or something
worth explaining in the Autoconf documentation or in a FAQ.

Q: Why does Automake not remove `Makefile' in the course of "make
distclean"? The GNU Makefile standards demand that every file added
to the distributed file tree by "configure" and "make all" should be
removed. This includes the Makefile. Keeping `Makefile' is of no
use, since any subsequent "make" would try to remake it using
`config.status', which has been removed, causing the "make" to fail.

Sincerely,

Christian Cornelssen

P.S.: Many thanks for your response to my "automake 1.5 feedback"
mail, wherein you explained the first of the ten mentioned topics.
Since the remaining topics are quite unrelated, I am afraid that
they might escape notice due to the mail being marked as "answered".
(This is just a reminder for safety, no request for a reply.)

P.P.S.: Automake 1.5's rules for depcomp + libtool work very well and
have produced the expected results so far. Great!
