automake-1.7.3 on HP Itanium-2: a few test failures

I recently got a guest account on an HP Itanium-2 cluster 

        Intel Itanium 2 (2CPUs, 1GHz, 8GB RAM, 36GB disk)
        GNU/Linux 2.4.18-e.12smp [Red Hat Linux Advanced Server release 2.1AS 
(Derry)]

and have been doing test installations and benchmarking.  The
automake-1.7.3 build reported seven test failures:

        FAIL: destdir.test
        FAIL: dollar.test
        FAIL: gnits2.test
        FAIL: man2.test
        FAIL: pr300-lib.test
        FAIL: pr300-prog.test
        FAIL: transform.test

If these haven't already been reported, I can pursue them according to
your instructions.

P.S. The vendor supplies autoconf-2.13 and automake-1.4-p5 in
/usr/bin.
