Hi,
     Mmmm!

Perl version is 5.6.1 - which isn't the latest but is pretty recent.

By happenstance, I thought to myself 'make clean' and then tried to
reconfigure - which complained about an old version of autoconf - but I had
just installed the latest 2.57! A few seconds later I discovered that the
autoconf found first in the search path was not that recently installed
one. This lead to the thought that when I installed autoconf I immediately
ran an automake configure - which seemed not to have found the old one -
which somehow must have got into the equation subsequently during make and
fouled things up.

Anyway, this morning I cleared out old autoconf, remade and installed
the new one and found that automake configured, built, tested and installed
without any problem.

This seems to be the result of the original autoconf on my machine
having been installed in the slackware distribution in an 'old' location
which was not affected when the new version went into /usr/local/bin -
hence the whole confusion.

Ah! Well! One lives and learns. Sorry for the trouble - and thanks for
the hint about configuration. I will crawl away quietly into the corner
again!!

                        Regards,

                                                Keith
