Okay, I have checked out a fresh top-level tree of automake and am
running it thru '/usr/bin/make check' right now. It will likely take
a bit of time before I have all of the results.

Yes, I can understand that.

If it works on OpenBSD it is much more likely to work on FreeBSD and
NetBSD too than if does not.

btw: I have a set of the OpenBSD 3.5 disks, but I have not had time to
find a machine and load it with OpenBSD yet.

I understand.

Hmmm... I could be wrong, but it looks like the automake top-of-tree
uses the autoconf top-of-tree and I am unable to checkout autoconf as I
get a permissions error:

% cvs -d :pserver:address@hidden:/cvs/autoconf co autoconf
cvs server: Updating autoconf
cvs server: failed to create lock directory for `/cvs/autoconf/autoconf'
(/cvs/autoconf/autoconf/#cvs.lock): Permission denied
cvs server: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/cvs/autoconf/autoconf'
cvs [server aborted]: read lock failed - giving up
%

so, it may be difficult to know with certainty that I have the same set
of changes as you might in any case.

However, using autoconf-2.59, with the './bootstrap' command for automake
I have started a '/usr/bin/make check' to see if I still get the same
fifteen failures as with your untested patch. I will let you know what I
observe.

        Thanks,
