You still haven't answered the question on which file system you are
using.  Until we can figure out why creating a link is failing (perhaps
your choice of file system doesn't support hard links, as in VFAT?), we
can't explain the error message we were seeing.  And then there is still
the question of whether automake should work around that, and/or whether
it is a flaw in the autoconf testsuite for not dealing with automake's
failure to copy.
