As Paul pointed out, that's appearantly expected behavior. Maybe the man page
section that relates to what gets parsed within double quotes should get
updated so it lists ! as something that gets parsed, unless preceeded by
a backslash, in which case neither is parsed (That particular behavior,
though expected, is not documented anywhere in the man page).
