Deciphering links

I have posted this previously on gnu.utils.help, but they weren't any -
help that is.

If I have a link, such as a -> b, how can find out the "b" part from a
script? Right now I am using `ls -o $item | awk '{print $10}'`. There
must be a more graceful way to do this.

TIA, Mark L.
