And since it doesn't do what you want, even that is not a solution.

Well, I'm not the maintainer.  But this is the standard behavior, and
the maintainer likes to follow the standard.

I certainly agree that it could have been made better when it was
invented.  But changing it now would be problematic.  What fixes your
script could break someone else's.
