It works for me.  Do you have PROMPT_COMMAND set?  If so that will
mess up the exit status.

address@hidden ~]$ unset PROMPT_COMMAND
address@hidden ~]$ echo foo | false
address@hidden ~]$ echo $?
1
address@hidden ~]$
