It can also be reproduced with:
PS1='\[\e[1;31m\]1234567 X\[\e[0m\] '
The locale must be a utf one:
export LC_ALL=en_GB.utf8
The strange thing is: I can't reproduce this on Feisty (the still
cooking Ubuntu release), only on Gentoo.
