Bug ID: 21659
Summary: strings behaviour when called on a directory
Product: binutils
Version: 2.26
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: binutils
Assignee: unassigned at sourceware dot org
Reporter: jg at jguk dot org
Target Milestone: ---
Existing output
===============
$ strings mydir
$ strings missingfile
strings: 'missingfile': No such file
My feeling is that there should be a message for 'mydir'
Expected output
===============
$ strings mydir
strings: 'mydir': Is a directory
Bit of a long reference, but back in 2003 Nick Clifton replied:
