You can point it at the GNU M4 you installed to /usr/local by setting the M4 environment variable to the correct path: export M4=/usr/local/bin/m4 (assuming you are using bash or equivalent).
Or add /usr/local/bin in front of PATH. Often there are some other installations one has to when building GNU stuff.
