I agree.  As I was telling Jim, I think I was using the wrong tool for the
job.  And yes, I had the problem you described.  For example, on Solaris
(ufs filesystem), empty directories are 512 bytes long, while on Cygwin +
NTFS, they're 0 bytes.

I just wrote a simple perl script to add up the (logical) sizes of
regular files, and that worked well enough for my purposes.
