They don't always work the same for me:

  $ touch x; chmod a+x x
  $ /bin/ls -F x
  $ /bin/ls -p x
  $ /bin/ls --version|head -n1
  ls (coreutils) 5.2.1

Please give a precise example (saying exactly what you expect)
and mention what version of ls you're using.
