This isn't so much a bug as a request. The colors that dircolors
produces by default are selected for light text on a dark background
(e.g while on black). It's quite common (I don't claim universal, but
common nevertheless) to use a dark on light scheme as it is easier on
the eyes (e.g black on paper-white), and has been for a long time (macs,
spark terminals, inverting switches on herc monitors etc).
This request is for a switch on the dircolors utility that would change
the light colors like bright green to dark equivalents like forest
green. I'm sure this would save thousands of users a lot of stuffing
around.
I should also mention that all the documentation on dircolors mentions
the system default /etc/DIR_COLORS filem but this doesn't necessarily
exist unless you write it (I'm using debian if that helps). I spend
several frustrating hours swearing and searching for the thing last
week, before finding that the ultimate source of the color set is
compiled into the binary. So I request that the man page be amended to
mention this vital fact, that no reference book (that I own) or webpage
seems to mention anywhere. I had to ask about three different sysadmins
before I found one that knew.
Anyway, these are requests, and I accept they're not top priority, but I
think they should go in the todo list somewhere.
Regards,
Simeon.
