Yes, is there some way we can give an award for "Best Coreutils Bug

It does lead me to wonder whether there are similar circularity issues
elsewhere. For example, is it OK that canonicalize_file_name will
mess up if someone is deleting and recreating directories, under the
assumption that canonicalizing has undefined behavior anyway if the
file system is mutating out from under you?
