sort 5.93 on Fedora Core 5 exits if intermediate file reaches 2 GB |

Under Fedora Core 5 (and probably other versions), the program sort
(version 5.93) exits (without cleaning up temporary files) in any of the
temporary files reach the size of 2 GB.
I know this is not a filesystem issue as I have copied files (since ftp
has the same 2GB limit) on the system.
