On thinking about it further, I like the idea of having 'uniq' be
consistent with 'sort', but I'd prefer 'uniq' to have the same syntax
as 'sort', i.e, 'uniq' should use the same -k option that 'sort' has.

Could you implement a patch along those lines, and give us permission
to use it?  You shouldn't use the Debian patch unless we can be sure
we can get written permission from its author.

However, I'd wait for Jim's advice on this before doing any real work,
since he'd have to decide whether GNU uniq should support a -k option.
