The fact that you mailed the obsolete bug-sh-utils shows that you are due
for an upgrade. sh-utils was merged into coreutils; the latest stable
version is 5.97, and there is a release candidate 6.2 that will become the
latest stable version 6.3 any day now.
There are several fixes in date in the meantime; while none of them are
related to your particular issue (again, your issue is with cron, not
date), it is probably wise to upgrade.
