Yes, thanks, that explains the results all right....

For a more realistic test, we need to sort something larger, so that
'sort' becomes disk-bound.  Maybe a terabyte of data or so, for a
typically small machine nowadays that has a GB or two of RAM?

It will be a bit of a pain to arrange for a decent set of test cases
here, but without it I'm afraid we're just guessing about what will
make things run faster oversll.
