6.12 is rather old.
Please use coreutils-7.1 instead:
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-7.1.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/coreutils-7.1.tar.xz
