Well, at least one reason is because lib/Makefile.in hasn't look like
that since we switched to the newer version of Automake.

I am using GNU Make, but that shouldn't make any difference because
Nicolas's generated Makefile is definitely defective and should work
(or, in this case, *not* work) exactly the same with either GNU Make or
standard make.  My guess would be that something was wrong with
Automake's variable substitution (the entire line should not have
disappeared) that got fixed in the newer version.
