Not necessarily.

The temperature ranges for components are *operating*, and, generally, 
*continuous* ranges.  If he froze down a drive -- I've done it too, with 
mixed results -- then the drive wasn't *operating* at those temps, and as 
long as he pulled it out the fridge before running it, it warmed up fast 
enough that the condensation issue would be the only major potential 
problem.
