Follow-up Comment #1, bug #24140 (project findutils):
AFAICS find has no way to distinguish "unknown because permissions do not
allow you to see this information" from "unknown because d_type is not
supported on this filesystem, or this part of this filesystem".

As far as I can see from what you say, d_type is DT_UNKNOWN, so find can't
tell which are directories.
But the long and the short of it is this - I don't have an AFS system, so I
cannot test candidate patches. If you want findutils to handle this situation
better, you will need to either send me a patch (that doesn't break anything
else) or recruit someone else to do so.
Such a patch would need to address both find and oldfind.
