How does changing 'gawk' to 'Gawk' make things suddenly work?
I don't really understand why this is needed....

AFAIK, the 'Invoking Gawk' is a section in info page (tex), which is used/referenced several times throughout the info page (tex). The info utility cannot find the 'Invoking gawk' section when it is requested to do so by using 'info awk'. At least we have this problem in Fedora:

address@hidden ~]# info -x1 awk
info: looking for file "gawk"
info: looking for file gawk in /usr/share/info
info: found file /usr/share/info/gawk.info.gz

The info finds some references to 'gawk', however our users still ends up being taken to the "top info node":
"""
File: dir,      Node: Top,      This is the top of the INFO tree.

This is the Info main menu (aka directory node).
A few useful Info commands:

  'q' quits;
  'H' lists all Info commands;
  'h' starts the Info tutorial;
  'mTexinfo RET' visits the Texinfo manual, etc.

* Menu:

Archiving
* Cpio: (cpio).                 Copy-in-copy-out archiver to tape or disk.
* Tar: (tar).                   Making tape (or disk) archives.
...
"""

When I manually fix the typo in the dir file of info, then it will correctly take user to "2 Running 'awk' and 'gawk'" section. So the problem is caused by info pages being case sensitive, and the section is being referenced differently in dir and the info file itself.

I hope this makes sense. :)
