I found the offending commit --- git bisect is just amazing.

I can undo the change, but that would just mask the problem. There is
something subtle going on that I have to track down.

Thanks for the lovely test case; these kind of bug reports make
it so much easier for me to find and fix problems.

I will update when I have a solution (I hope!).
