Problems compiling gs7.0 with gcc2.95.3

I wonder if anyone can tell me a trick to get ghostscript 7.0
to compile with gcc2.95.3

make collapses with the following error:

./src/zdevcal.c:47: warning: unused variable `ltime'
make: *** [obj/zdevcal.o] Error 1

Older versions of ghostscript compile OK. Ghostscript is one of several
programs that compiled fine with older versions of gcc that upgrading to
gcc2.95.3 has made difficult. (I'd reinstall egcs, except I can't get
gcc2.95.3 to compile that either).
