Greetings friend,
As Martha Peace says, "Many women, even Christian ones, are confused and
sometimes hostile about what it means for a wife to be submissive to her
husband. The topic is much maligned and misunderstood both in the world and in
the church." There are three prevalent wrong views of submission, one of which
Martha Peace calls "doormat theology"--when a woman is submissive to her
husband even when he is sinning against her. Another wrong view is
asceticism--when a wife strictly denies herself and suffers unnecessarily
(Colossians 2:18-23), feeling that she is "suffering for the Lord". The third
wrong view is feminism, which manifests itself in the church as an emphasis on
the "mutual" submission of the husband and wife. The pastors teach this instead
of teaching clearly the responsibility of the wife to submit to her husband,
because this teaching is so volatile.
God made us subject to (or hupotasso in the Greek) our husbands so that there
will be harmony in the home. He is not a respecter of persons, He regards men
and women as equal regarding salvation. But as Christ subordinated Himself to
the will of the Father (Philippians 2:5-8), so we submit ourselves to our
husbands so that we can be a suitable helper and God's plan for the family can
be carried out.
