Glibc problem should not lockup your system. Are you able to telnet into
your computer when it stops responding ? If you box is not on the network
switch to one of the consoles and type (in bash):

 while [ x=x ] ; do sleep 1; /bin/echo \\007 ; done

If the system continues to beep after you are unable to use it then it is
not locked up hard, likely an Xserver or sound driver problem.
