I've just tried the same on a BeagleBoard xM and the same thing happens.
This is either a compiler bug in the ARM-backend or some assumption is
made in the code. I'll start to have a dig around. Can you think of
any good places to start looking?
If you'd like to have a go at debugging yourself, I can provide you with
ssh access to an ARM box that exhibits the bug.
