Problem in moving from Perl-5.6.0 to Perl-5.8.2 |

In January I installed GMP-4.1.2 and everything I tried worked okay.
At that point I was using (probably) Perl-5.6.0.
Recently I tried sample.pl again, this time definitely using
Perl-5.6.0, and it worked okay.
Yesterday I first removed the (RedHat) package for Perl-5.6.0 and then
installed Perl-5.8.2, the latest stable version, which I had
configured, built, and tested -- all successfully as far as I could
see.
Now, however, when I try to execute sample.pl, I get a message that
Gmp.so has a symbol Perl_safemalloc which is not defined, and in
checking the library libperl.a which was installed along with
Perl-5.8.2, I could not find Perl_safemalloc although I did find
Perl_safesysmalloc. I send an e-mail to the perlbug people and they
sent back one saying I would probably have to re-build any software
that previously had used Perl_safemalloc.
So I plan to rebuild GMP as I would like it to be compatible with the
latest stable version of Perl, and thought I would let you know what
seems to be needed when other users upgrade from an earlier version of
Perl to 5.8.2. (I am also going to have to re-build GIMP as well as
some of the supporting programs like Gtk-Perl for much the same
reason.)
Hope this information helps.
