gnats redhat install problems

 I cannot get gnats to work. I've been at this for daaaaaays. Any help
 would be HUGELY appreciated.
 
 
 
 **Server is Linux Redhat, using xinetd, gnats 3.113.1, all unpacked and
 compiled using the defaults.
 
 **I've got a gnats account with a .cshrc (CShell's ok, right?)
 containing:
 
 set path = ($path /usr/local/bin /usr/local/libexec/gnats)
 setenv GNATS_ROOT /usr/local/share/gnats/gnats-db
 
 ** ~gnats = $GNATS_ROOT = /usr/local/share/gnats/gnats-db
 
 ** I've got a file in /etc/xinet.d/gnatsd containing (used filename
 'support' as well):
 
 service support
 {
         disable = no
         socket_type     = stream
         protocol        = tcp
         wait            = no
         user            = gnats
         server          = /usr/local/libexec/gnats/gnatsd
 }
 
 ** As root I run /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart successfully.
 
 
 ** I've got the email alias /etc/aliases:
 
 bugs:  "| /usr/local/libexec/gnats/queue-pr -q"
 
 ** which gives me the following error:

 ** what is smrsh? and how do I fix it?????
 
 
 Any ideas on what to try??? Any tests to run? argh!
