I don't think so. I'm actually surprised that having outside email
unavailable caused gnats to rename the file to .XXX. When this happens,
gnats might log this somewhere, such as email to the gnats user. Have you
checked the email of the gnats user? Mail for gnats is probably sent to
somebody else. Check /etc/aliases to see if gnats is an alias for somebody
else.
