GNU Chess is an engine not a board.

Are you perhaps using "WinBoard", if so probably best to check the
WinBoard forum.

Not sure on the current status of WinBoard (I use GNU/Linux myself), but
there are some recent versions that bundle Polyglot (for UCI support)
and Winboard protocol, and so should work with most engines assuming you
pick the right settings.
