But if the only thing people expect shortcuts to be good for is
"symlink to an executable" kind of thing, then I really think
Emacs shouldn't do more than either redirect find-file or provide
a major-mode that displays the content nicely.
I don't see any possible misfeature in the `major-mode' solution.
And apart from potential infinite looping (in case of a shortcut pointing
to itself), I don't see any subtle misfeature in the `redirect find-file'
solution either.

Could you describe a concrete possible subtle misfeature ?
