I don't have a system at hand with an UTF-8 locale, so I can't
try to reproduce this here, I think.

Could you please compile Emacs with 

  $ make clean
  $ make CFLAGS="-g" 

start it under GDB with args

  (gdb) set args -xrm "emacs.synchronous: true"

and with a breakpoint on the abort in kbd_buffer_store_event?  I'd
like to see from where that is called.  AFAICS, it's not directly
called from the KeyPress handler, for example.
