This reminds me of a bug I ran into before.
Does anything happen if you play with the font path - and restart emacs
after a change? E.g. remove the components emacs doesn't need, and/or
put the default font's directory first or last in font path.
(Set it with `xset fp= PATH'. But save the output of xset -q first, so
you can restore the font path afterwards.)
BTW, what's the full font name? "misc 10x20" sounds like an abbrev.
