"used 3020 available 1426748" jazz in dired and ls

I start dired and

excuse me, but is "used 3020 available 1426748" something I should be
concerned about?  If not could you go please tell my accountant
instead?  Can I turn this off please?  Are you just trying to give me
one more thing to be nervous about?

C-h m says that dired is in the form of ls -lR (however ls -lR only
says "total 30..").  Anyway, how about letting me turn that off there
too somehow?  A search for "total" on the ls man page finds nothing.

Oh, I see, way back when RMS's hair was only 2.54 cm long [pictures, I
must see the pictures---does he just gloss over those formative years?
what did he do in the pre-leadership era?  toaster repair boy?] these
things were of some concern.
