Just to confirm that having used that libungif (and rebuilt emacs -
just to make sure!) the problem is gone. Thanks!

Had a problem building libungif though(!)
/bin/sh ../libtool --mode=compile gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I..
     -g -O2 -I/usr/X11R6/include -c qprintf.c
rm -f .libs/qprintf.lo
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -g -O2 -I/usr/X11R6/include -c
  -fPIC -DPIC qprintf.c -o .libs/qprintf.lo
qprintf.c: In function `GifQprintf':
qprintf.c:42: `va_start' used in function with fixed args
make[2]: *** [qprintf.lo] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/robert/packages/libungif-4.1.0b1/lib'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/robert/packages/libungif-4.1.0b1'
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

But a bit of mucking around with HAVE_VARARGS_H got it to compile.
I've cc'ed this to the maintainer in the hope that it's some help
