The possible values for input to command `fringe-mode' are these:
`none', `default', `left-only', `right-only', `minimal' and `half'
These values need to be described in the doc string. In particular,
`default', `minimal', and `half' are not obvious - especially `default'.
What is important about `default' is not that it is the default but that
it means show both left and right fringes. It should be renamed `both'.
The doc string should say that the default width of 8 pixels is used
for all except `half', which uses 5 pixels, and `minimal', which uses 1
pixel.
I'd also suggest renaming `half' to `narrow', and perhaps
`(left|right)-only' to `(left'|right):
both, narrow, minimal, left, right, none
