I cannot reproduce this with Emacs trunk r104293.

The *help* buffer pops up and states "no documentation found for 'my_symbol_name'". Invoking python-describe-symbol through C-c C-f also works.

The error message looks like something might not be configured right on your system. Do you have other problems invoking shell commands? Can you try a `M-x shell-command' and see if that one works?

emacs -Q

in python-mode on some python symbol: M-x python-describe-symbol

instead of output in *Help* I get

WARNING: terminal is not fully functional
- (press RETURN)

;;;;;;

Also Return doesn't give results, buffer is dead.

Bug does not occur with

GNU Emacs 23.2.1 (i586-suse-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.22.1) of 2011-02-22
