This issue may be already sorted out. But anyway, I have put these 2 lines in my .emacs and that does the trick: (require 'ls-lisp) (setq ls-lisp-use-insert-directory-program nil) Now, dired will use a lisp implementation of ls (which in fact, uses directory-files-and-attributes internally). It works for me on OpenBSD. -- Manuel Giraud
