Paul,

I'm sorry, I was too occupied with other things! Now that GNU Emacs 24.0.90 
compiles well it also runs well with this wide-int patch. I compiled with -O0 
and -Os with GCC 4.5.3, the original compiler. I'll try now with Apple modified 
GCC version 4.0 and 4.2 and their -fast optimiser switch. For theses tests I'll 
use the new optimised GNU Emacs 24.0.90.
