i just compiled the emacs-24 branch as at Git commit 9f8e964e, using:

--with-x-toolkit=lucid

and then:

--with-x-toolkit=GTK3

In both instances, neither C-x 5 0 nor C-x C-c caused the daemon to
shut down. :-)
