i) git master has version 25.0.50, not 24.4.50
ii) even the emacs-24 branch has version 24.4.51, and has done so since
before switching to git

IIUC, a local shadow of something broke something?
I don't think this is an Emacs problem.

But obviously we can't make that the default setting?
