That is also true if point is before an overlay-rendered newline, isn't it?
What I said is, if it's a hack, then I want a hack that will work today.If you can avoid the leading newline in the overlay string, there's no hack here.
I don't think I can. Like mentioned, it's the solution for http://debbugs.gnu.org/18285, which commonly appeared in report-emacs-bug buffers (so it's not like a rare case I could sweep under a rug).
